Centering with CSS for IE6

This had me really confused and within 10 minutes of putting my mouse through my computer screen, so I thought I would post it to remind myself next time.
I was trying to centre the main division that enclosed all the other divisions in a html document, but it wasn't working for no apparent reason. After searching on google I found that it was a bug with IE6 (the browser I have a work). To fix it you have to add a text-align style to both the body and the division. I still have no idea why but it works.
I still have no idea why my embedded swf files won't display in IE6 because as far as I know they work in all other browsers.
